MAIL ART DISRUPTION

disruption - an act of delaying or interrupting the continuity; a disorderly outburst or tumult; an event that results in a displacement or discontinuity; the act of causing disorder from within (social, political, technological and artistic systems).

“Networked Disruption - Rethinking Oppositions in Art, Hacktivism and Business” is an exhibition and a series of events produced in Slovenija by Aksioma - Institute for Contemporary Art, Ljubljana (www.aksioma.org), Škuc Gallery and Drugo more, Rijeka and curated by Tatiana Bazzichelli (http://networkingart.eu - http://disruptiv.biz), hosted by Škuc Gallery in Ljubljana. This exhibition - that will take place from March 11 to April 3, 2015, and then will travel to the MMSU in Rijeka from April 23 till May 14 - is centred on the concept of "Networked Disruption", as an opportunity to show new possible routes of social and political action after the emergence of the business of social media and Web 2.0. Distributed, autonomous and decentralised networking practices of disruption become a means for highlighting oppositional hacktivist and artistic strategies within the framework of art and business. The exhibition is based on the analysis described in the book Networked Disruption: Rethinking Oppositions in Art, Hacktivism and the Business of Social Networking by Tatiana Bazzichelli (DARC Press, The Digital Aesthetics Research Centre of Aarhus University, 2013). The exhibition will present materials related to several networking projects that challenge the notion of power and hegemony, such as mail art, Neoism, Luther Blissett, Anonymous, Anna Adamolo, Les Liens Invisibles, the Telekommunisten collective, The San Francisco Suicide Club, The Cacophony Society, the early Burning Man Festival, Janez Janša, Janez Janša, Janez Janša and others.

The mail art section of Networked Disruption, curated by Vittore Baroni, will present a selection of “disruptive” mail art works from the E.O.N. Archive, together with original postal works on this theme (free size and technique) that YOU are invited to mail to:

DOCUMENTATION / DOCUMENTAZIONE

In the tradition of the Decentralized Networker Congresses, of the Incongruous Meetings and of the Obscure Actions, 2010 saw the international diffusion of a collective open project, that lasted twelve months, aimed at a shared detoxification from the art toxins that oppress our daily life (how many invites to exhibitions, events and presentations do we get every day?).
Hundreds of people in various parts of the world took part in the course of 2010 in ART DETOX therapeutic group meetings, they carried out “Insulation Tests” by visiting art galleries and museums with their head hidden in a paper bag or they practiced “Relaxation Tests” by sticking curative ART DETOX patches on their bodies, by playing water football in a small basin or by “combing dolls”. Are your ARTeries clogged with toxins too?

The final documentation of the ART DETOX 2010 project is finally ready, an illustrated booklet of 32 pages (texts in English and Italian) with inserts and original souvenirs (including the “Art Detoxed” badge created by Gumdesign), plus a multimedia cd-r with an ample selection of texts and images and an ART DETOX EP: five tracks of artherapeutic music exclusively recorded by Rod Summers (Vecdor featuring Korka Helgadóttir), Gina Pritti Tutti al Lago, Ratto Goal, Gianluca Becuzzi and Le Forbici di Manitù.

My mail art archive E.O.N. (Ethereal Open Network) was started in 1977 and is now stored in various rooms of my house in Viareggio, visits on appointment only. I have tried to preserve, thoughout the years, a few copies of each book, record or publication that I produced (artistamps, postcards, leaflets, etc.). Some of these publications have been sold out for decades and can only be found with some luck through collectors’ lists or on eBay. ARTE POSTALE! 100 / KLANG!

One of the best known and probably the most long-lived mail art magazine on the planet, Arte Postale!, published since 1979 by Near the Edge editions, has assembled original works and published materials by hundreds of international networkers. The project is considered concluded with issue n. 100 (December 2009), a documentation of the show of “postal sounds” and artist’s musical instruments Bzzzoing!, part of the Klang! suoni contemporanei sonic arts festival (Viareggio, 7-8-9 August 2009).

Whew, this is a rather busy “mail art year” for me! I have just finished mailing out three issues of my Arte Postale! magazine (# 90, 93 and 93, while # 91 was delivered at the end of June to coincide with one year after the loss of my friend Piermario Ciani), for a total of over two hundred envelopes. And to round off my thirtieth year in the mail art network, a sixth and final project is in the wings (see ULTIMATUM! invite below). It was indeed a rather extravagant investment of time and money even for my own intense correspondence standards, but I really wanted to test the state of health of the “ethereal” postal network and my own limits within the medium.

The results have been very encouraging, with a large participation and successful public presentations of the “art hats” and Ciao, Paolina! projects, plus the children workshop at the MACHmit! Museum in Berlin was very well received by organizers and audience alike. Mail Art may be an “old horse”, but for me this form of expression still represents an enlightening anticipation of a wider “paradigm shift” in culture, that social commentators are just starting to acknowledge (see for example the essay Convergence Culture by MIT Professor Henry Jenkins, New York University Press, 2006): a collective participation in the production and fruition of “transmedial” works, the merging and sublimation of individual visions in a open networking perspective (giving life to what William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin called a “third mind”). Thanks if you participated in any of the projects, and do keep in touch, much more is yet to happen!

ULTIMATUM!

Wars, terrorism, climate changes, pollution, over-population, epidemics... With the complicity of the mass media, we are kept in a constant state of alarm, living every day of our life under the sword of Damocles of a never-ending series of ultimatums.

What I request is simply the design for a rubberstamp in black and white inspired by the theme “Ultimatum!”. I need an original or good print on paper, any size, no half-tones or grey areas, no computer files only and please stick to the theme. The deadline is Halloween, November 2nd 2007. All the participants will receive a free catalogue (Arte Postale! 94).

hallo, I hope all is going well with you & your projects!

The reason why I write you:

A friend of mine is filming a documentary on MAIL ART starting from my archive, I am trying to put together a "best of" of postal networking-related musical compositions that he can use for the soundtrack. I started with giving him some pieces from the VEC anthologies, Rod Summers, Keith Bates, Monty Cantsin/Istvan Kantor, my own Le Forbici di Manitù 1992 Congress anthem. I wonder if you have any appropriate idea of tracks I should include or material to suggest, possibly in digital Mp3 format (so it can be sent via-email, deadline is mid-September). If your contribution or proposal is used, you will be credited and I will send you a copy of the documentary (it's not for commercial release, my young friend is graduating from art academy and this is his final thesis work).
