(ABAD) A BOOK ABOUT DEATH: The Ties That Bind

Artists are invited to create their own book pages that illustrate their unique interpretations of THE TIES THAT BIND all living things universally through death. They may also choose to celebrate the ties that now bind all ABAD artists throughout the world (courtesy of Ray Johnson and Matthew Rose). Any interpretation is welcome.
All these pages will then be bound together in a handmade book. A BOOK ABOUT DEATH will finally become a hand-bound book produced by global artists.
This new exhibit will feature for the first time, work from worldwide artists that are actual pages
like Ray Johnson originally created in 1963, and NOT postcards
Create a one- or two-sided piece on a 5.5” x 8.5” (Digest Size) sheet of paper (PAPER–not card stock).
Format may be vertical or horizontal. It does NOT have to say "A Book About Death" anywhere on it.
Submit two copies—one will be hung on the walls of the gallery and the other will be bound into a handmade volume, thereby furnishing an Omega to the Alpha of the Unbound Book of the original show. The book will be handmade and bound by an original ABAD artist, LuAnn T. Palazzo (TheDesignDiva.net), and also displayed at the exhibition.
The exhibited book(s) will go into the permanent collection of the Second Avenue Firehouse Gallery. After the show comes down, I will also make books from the displayed pages in hopes that the MoMA, NY will want them!
Artists can include any information about themselves on the pages, front or back. The exhibition organizers only ask that you submit good work, worthy of an interesting and exciting page in this global book.
The two pages are then to be mailed to the gallery in Bay Shore, NY for exhibition.
DEADLINE FOR PHYSICAL PAGES TO BE IN THE GALLERY: JULY 15, 2011.
All submissions will also be posted on this blog. Please email those in 180 ppi jpg file format.

An Open Call to Artists to Contribute to RAY JOHNSON & A BOOK ABOUT DEATH
WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS ABAD SHOW?
“RAY JOHNSON AND A BOOK ABOUT DEATH” is a new exhibition that will, for the first time, feature a copy of the original 1955 ABAD project by American artist Ray Johnson–the inspiration for this entire series of exhibitions. It will set the stage for all 480 cards from the original Emily Harvey Gallery exhibit together with new submissions created especially for this show. Curated by Joan Harrison, LuAnn Palazzo and Constance Wolf, the new ABAD show will open in the SAL Art Gallery at the CW Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY, and run October 31 to November 4, 2010.
Submit one 4"x 6" artwork in any media on the theme of death/life. Please include the words “A BOOK ABOUT DEATH” on the front and your name and your e-mail address/website URL on the back. The work may be sent in an envelope for protection or mailed as a postcard. All submitted work will become part of a permanent Ray Johnson ABAD Archive. It will not be returned.
You must submit both a physical work and a virtual one to be part of the project. Every submitted piece will be posted to the exhibition blog at http://rayjohnsonandabookaboutdeath.blogspot.com/

Theme: “Beuys will be Beuys” This exhibit pays homage to the creator of theFree International University and the ideas of social sculpture. So let yourart reflect and express “how we mould and shape the world in which we live.”“the total artwork of the future social order”, and “free democraticsocialism”. Joseph BeuysThe gallery one will be on view in the The Mabee-Simpson Library on thecampus of Lyon College and gallery two will be on view at Morning StarCoffee House both in Batesville, Arkansas, USA, There will be a weeklyrotation of 4 to 5 artists per gallery over the course of one year. Thisexhitition period will be extended depending on the response from theInternation Mail Art Network.Size is limited to 4”X6 or 10.16 cm X 15.24 cm for postcards and 8” or 20.32cm overall for 3D pieces. Email submissions accepted.Please include your name, address and email address. Theme: Contents: Objects, Piles and Boxes
The artist are free to create whatever comes to mind. Work must be 3D and beable to withstand climate changes as the Ozark Micro Sculpture Garden willbe installed outside in the The Mabee-Simpson Library Garden on the campusof Lyon College. The Garden will be installed for one year and will have aweekly rotation of 5 artist exhibited.Size is limited to 8” or 20.32 cm overall.Please include your name, address and email address. You are welcome to sendmore than one piece.Exhibition documentation will include a website and catalogue to everyparticipant + CD
Deadline to be received November 30, 2007.
Show will be installed the firstweek of January and the concurrent website will be up that week.
