Mail Art at Kunsthaus Hamburg - Open Call

The exhibition Politics of Love at the Kunsthaus Hamburg (30.11.2024 - 2.2.2025) replaces boundaries and power conflicts with an inclusive, polyphonic togetherness. The exhibition thus thematises forms of the common good and solidarity, based on the philosopher Michael Hardt's politics of love.

A relevant historical point of reference for the international group exhibition is the Biennale of Peace, which was realised in 1985 on the initiative of Fluxus artist Robert Filliou at the Kunsthaus Hamburg and Kunstverein in Hamburg.

In the run-up to this project, artists were invited to submit mail art contributions. Mail art emerged in the 1960s and describes art sent by post in various media, whereby the aspect of democratic exchange beyond established systems is central.

Open Call for Submission

Drawing upon this special campaign, we invite you to design a work of mail art based on the question "What is a politics of love?". The submissions will be made accessible at the Kunsthaus for the duration of the exhibition. Selected pieces will be published on social media and in the online publication accompanying the project. After the end of the exhibition, all participants will receive another work by post.

Formal requirements

  • Size: postcard (A6)
  • The name and title of the work must be clearly legible on the back of the piece.
  • Please do not include any address details on the work itself.

The works can be submitted from now until 31.12.2024 at the latest, sufficiently stamped and with a clearly legible return address in an A6 envelope:

Kunsthaus Hamburg
Jaana Heine
Klosterwall 15

Please note that works which do not meet the requirements cannot be considered.

Peace, Hans Braumüller
