Mail art call: Wo+Men in R.E.D. (Reinvent Environmental Dimension)

A year has passed since the TeeToTum art team and more than 22 women from different parts of the globe tried to approach the idea of crisis interpreting it on many levels. While we tried to explore the meaning of crisis and the reasons that may cause it, many ideas came to mind and mainly the realization that a crisis is not only economical or political but it can be social and personal as well. A crisis has many faces. It is the peak of a developing negative process and only by overcoming it, can life to return to a normal state. How painful can such a situation become? How much can it affect our daily lives without drifting us in its course? Where can it lead? The artist whose work was presented constituted examples of strength as each one of them had successfully overcome or was in the process of dealing with a crisis of some sort. They had not allowed a crisis to defeat them but instead they used it to expand their boundaries relying on their inner strength in a creative manner. Through their work they reflect on their lives, expressing creatively their turmoil, providing a voice for other people so they may also find relief in the realization of a common fate. The artworks were exhibited in two shows. The first one in Myro Gallery in Thessaloniki and the second in 512 Gallery in Ptolemaida and during the exhibitions several workshops were organized. The word “crisis” is still heard everywhere and it has become even more extensive for many more people. In the beginning of this project our goal was to investigate various aspects of a crisis from a female point of view. The male perspective can aid us in understanding the crisis situation better .For this reason we believe it will be interesting to return our project and invite both male and female artists to find ways and diminish the negative force and connotations of "crisis". Art is an excellent means of providing some balance and tranquility in our lives.

Ένας χρόνος πέρασε από την διοργάνωση έκθεσης της ομάδας TeeToTum και την παρουσίαση έργων περισσότερων από 22 γυναικών προερχόμενων από διαφορετικά μέρη της γης οι οποίες επεξεργάστηκαν την ιδέα της κρίσης από διαφορετικές οπτικές γωνίες. Ενώ προσπαθήσαμε να διερευνήσουμε την έννοια της κρίσης και τους παράγοντες που την δημιουργούν καταλήξαμε στο ότι μια κρίση δεν είναι μόνο οικονομική η πολιτική αλλά μπορεί να είναι κοινωνική όπως και προσωπική. Μία κρίση έχει πολλά πρόσωπα. Είναι η κορύφωση μιας αρνητικής διαδικασίας και η ζωή επιστρέφει σε φυσιολογικούς ρυθμούς μόνο αφού ξεπεραστεί. Πόσο επώδυνη είναι μία τέτοια κατάσταση; Πόσο επηρεάζει την καθημερινότητά μας; Που μπορεί να μας οδηγήσει;
Οι καλλιτέχνιδες των οποίων το έργο έχει παρουσιαστεί αποτελούν παραδείγματα δύναμης καθώς κάθε μία από αυτές έχει υπερβεί καταστάσεις κρίσιμες και συχνά ιδιαίτερα επώδυνες μη επιτρέποντας μία κρίση να τις νικήσει. Αντίθετα την χρησιμοποίησαν δημιουργικά για να επεκτείνουν τα όριά τους, βασιζόμενες στην εσωτερική τους δύναμη. Τα έργα τους παρουσιάστηκαν σε δύο εκθέσεις ,η πρώτη στη Γκαλλερί Μυρο στη Θεσσαλονίκη και η δεύτερη στην αίθουσα 512 στην Πτολεμαιδα. Κατά την διάρκεια των εκθέσεων οργανώθηκαν εργαστήρια ζωγραφικής.
Η λέξη κρίση ακόμη ακούγεται παντού και έχει δυστυχώς επεκταθεί επηρεάζοντας τις ζωές όλο και περισσότερων ανθρώπων. Αρχικά θέλαμε να εξερευνήσουμε την ιδέα της ''κρίσης'' από την οπτική γωνία της γυναίκας .Πιστεύουμε όμως ότι η ανδρική οπτική θα έχει επίσης μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον. Για αυτό το λόγο επιστρέφουμε στο θέμα μας προσκαλώντας καλλιτέχνες και των δύο φύλλων να εκφράσουν την αποψή τους για αυτό το θέμα και ίσως να ανακαλύψουμε τρόπους να μειώσουμε την αρνητική δύναμη της «κρίσης». Η τέχνη άλλωστε αποτελεί το καταλληλότερο μέσο που μπορεί να συνδράμει στην προσπάθειά μας να βελτιώσουμε την ζωή μας.

Women and the War

Marking the Centenary of the First World War, this mail art project for young people (aged 11-25 years) aims to create cross-cultural dialogue and exchange through research and visual art. Theresa Easton, the North East of England Project Manager, plans to work with young people in her region to research aspects of World War I and the legacy surrounding it. Using a wide range of printmaking techniques and art-making processes, they will be partnered with young people in other countries to exchange the art that results from their research. The exchanged artwork will be curated into an exhibition for display in communities and galleries throughout the North East region.

The project aims to increase understanding of the impact of conflict through its research into local historical records. Its use of printmaking techniques to explore and interpret local heritage resources has the potential to produce multiple artworks such as artist books, memory boxes, resource boxes and framed works. A complementary blog site will permit contributors world-wide to manage content.
