Mail Art Call: Cultural Exchange Brasil x Italia

Brazil or Italy? What comes in your mind when you think about Brazil and Italy?

Cultural exchange: Art, food, music, games, words, expressions and memories…  Which exchanges are evident in each culture? Dialogues? Influences of Italian immigration in Brazil and the massification of Brazilian culture around the world? Interferences in personal, professional or love life, or even the curiosity to travel? How can you visually represent the influences between Italy and Brazil?

The pieces will be used in exhibitions in this theme’s related events as well as to illustrate theses and articles.

Bonjour Boys and Girls, Ladies and Gentlemen, Madammes et Monsieurs, Damen en Heren, etc.

I will be away from home between 24 xi 2010 and 06 xii 2010, will not have easy access to a computer, and so I will not be replying to IUOMA messages on a regular basis.
I am leaving the relative warmth of the South of France and going to to Darlington in the North East of England.

Darlington is famous (well, fame is relative -- think Warohl and 15 minutes) for i) being the birthplace of the railways in 1825, ii) having the worst professional football (soccer) team in the English leagues last season (although we did beat Chelsea 4-1 in a 3rd Round FA Cup replay in 1956 -- these memories are so precious that we cherish them over 50 years later!), iii) being the birthplace of me. And that's about it, folks.

If you would like to send me a piece of Mail Art to arrive on or before Thursday 2 December (the first day of the Jewish holiday of Hannukah) I will send you something back -- probably a postcard, possibly an envelope.

Limit
border between earth and water,
the river harbor and the trade routes,
the channels and the gardens of the palaces,
a constant reference to a change in system, material and colour.

Exchange
not only of goods but also of colours and scents,
artistic and architectural influences,
mutual knowledge, therefore culture.

Sign
a condition of consent expressed in gesture, the conclusion of an agreement,
a trace superimposed on many others:
whose meaning is beyond the sum of the parts.

The Collage Museum's 15th Baker's Dozen International Collage Exchange deadline Oct 21 2009

Artists each make UP TO 13 collages, size 11"x14" (inches), and send them to Fort Worth, Texas, to arrive by October 21.
(you may also send as few as one)
Packages that arrive too late for the exchange will be held for the next exchange.

THEME: open

One collage is retained to be part of the permanent collection of the IMCAC, while remaining permanently on exhibition on the Museum's Internet site and possibly exhibited in future exhibitions held by the Museum.

The other 12 are distributed into parcels which are sent back to each contributing artist. So you send 13 of yours, get back 12 of others.

Certain works from the various exchanges will be selected for representing the Museum's flagship collection to be used for traveling exhibitions and as such will be framed in matching museum frames as funds are available. This prestigious flagship collection will be chosen by the director as being among the finest works in the collection and promoted as important examples of 21st century collage art.
